The Pointer Sisters’ Story Carries On at Stern Grove

Stern Grove’s sun-dappled amphitheater buzzed with anticipation yesterday, as The Pointer Sisters, now fronted by the indomitable Ruth Pointer, her daughter, and granddaughter, stepped into its Eucalyptus meadow. Ruth, the eldest and last of the original quartet, couldn’t hide her disbelief that she’s “the oldest of the four sisters” and the only one still standing, a quiet moment that hit like gospel.

She and her kin began their journey singing in their father’s church on Myrtle Street in Oakland, and on this stage, generations converged to keep that legacy alive. Their set was a dazzling trip through that history, featuring signature hits like “Jump (for My Love),” “Slow Hand,” “I’m So Excited,” and “Neutron Dance,” each number lifted by tight harmonies and the joyous collision of past and present .

They poured soul into every note, from the seasoned spark of “Automatic” to the effervescent release of “I’m So Excited,” reminding the grove’s audience why they remain a foundational voice in Bay Area music.

Watching Ruth share the stage with her daughter and granddaughter wasn’t just a performance, it was living proof that the Pointer Sisters’ spirit, harmony, and joy can echo across generations.
