The Castro Theatre Reopens in 2026 with Sam Smith Residency and Star-Studded Lineup

After an extensive $41 million renovation led by Another Planet Entertainment (APE), San Francisco’s legendary Castro Theatre is set to reopen its doors in February 2026, ushering in a dazzling new era of music, film, and community. Leading the charge is none other than Sam Smith, who will headline a twenty-night residency titled “To Be Free: San Francisco.”

The grand reopening marks a milestone for one of the city’s most cherished cultural landmarks, blending its cinematic heritage with a fresh slate of live performances and events that celebrate the diversity and creative spirit of the Bay Area.

APE announced the first wave of shows today (Nov. 4), featuring a remarkable mix of artists including Amber Mark, Alaska, Father John Misty, Jonathan Van Ness, Lucy Dacus, The Breeders, and Santigold, with more to come. Highlights include two-night runs from Father John Misty (March 24–25), The Format (April 16–17), and Lucy Dacus (May 18–19).

In addition to live music and comedy, the Castro will continue to honor its roots in film, helping celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Frameline Film Festival from June 17–27, 2026.

Tickets for all announced shows go on sale November 7 at 10 a.m. PT at thecastro.com.
