Q&A: Gloomy June

Gloomy June

How did you come up with the name of the band?

We based it on the SF weather in the summer.

How would you describe your sound?

Bittersweat, danceable, and deceptively sad.

When did you first become interested in playing music?

I became interested in playing music when I was 5. My grammy had a piano in the living room and I always wanted to pound away on it.

What’s the strangest or funniest thing that’s ever happened to you at a show?

One time a guy stage dove into a crowd that was not ready to hold him and he just smacked onto the ground. Similarly, I accidentally stepped off a stage Wile E Coyote style and landed on my face.

What are you listening to these days?

Lambrini Girls and KNEECAP, but I’m also still listening to Brat by Charli XCX from last year.

What does music mean to you?

Music is religious to me. Congregating in a space with my community to yell and dance gives my whole life meaning.

How’d you guys first get together to play music?

Devin and I started making music together just after college; Jack we found on Craigslist, and Ash through a friend. Devin and I have played with a few other members in projects but Jack and Ash are the few that seem equally stoked about making the music and taking it as far as we can.

San Francisco is full of music history. Who are some San Francisco musicians who inspired you?

Everyone that comes out of Different Fur studio and Text Me Records. Also Chokecherry and Destroy Boys.

What’s the biggest challenge in becoming a musician today?

Anyone can be a musician; you don’t even need to know how to play an instrument anymore, you can just draw the notes on a midi player. If you have the desire to play music in front of people, and more than just your friends and family, that’s where things get challenging.

What are some of your favorite Bay Area music venues?

Bottom of the Hill and Great American Music Hall are my favorites, and if you count South Bay, Art Boutiki is my third favorite.

Where do you like to get creative in San Francisco?

I like to walk around Golden Gate park and listen to music, and that usually helps me get creative.

Is there anything you’d like to plug?

Our new album is out June 6! We’re celebrating with a queer emo night party June 21 at El Rio.
