Q&A: BANKS Brings Her Rawest Era Yet to San Francisco

Banks

BANKS returns to San Francisco this week for a June 6 show at The Masonic, part of her headlining “Off With Her Head” tour. The new album, praised by Rolling Stone and V Magazine, features bold tracks like Delulu and I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend with Doechii, showcasing a fearless evolution in her sound.

Known for her moody blend of alt-pop and R&B, BANKS has spent over a decade building a fiercely loyal fanbase. Fresh off a sold-out global anniversary tour for her debut Goddess, she’s stepping into a new era with Off With Her Head—don’t miss this rare chance to see her live.

Ahead of the show, BANKS opened up about reclaiming her creative power, embracing contradictions, and how San Francisco’s energy pushes her to go even deeper on stage.

San Francisco has always embraced bold, emotional artists—how does playing here impact your performance or mindset going into a show?

San Francisco has this magnetic energy. The crowd really leans into the rawness, and that gives me permission to go deeper emotionally, to not hold anything back.

Your latest music feels like a deeper dive into raw, unfiltered emotion. What personal truths are you channeling on this tour?

This tour is about reclaiming pieces of myself, reclaiming joy! Feeling liberated creatively, taking risks. Being alone up there and holding power, playing piano, moving in my own way. I can’t wait.

You’ve evolved so much sonically—from shadowy alt-R&B to more experimental, industrial textures. Where do you feel most creatively free right now?

I feel most free when I stop trying to fit into a genre or expectation. When I have fun making music. When I separate it in my mind from the fact that it is now my job. I never want my process to change. It needs to be for my soul. In general, I want the music to reflect what it feels like inside me, even if it contradicts itself. That space of contradiction is where my creativity thrives.

You’re known for turning vulnerability into strength. Is there a moment in the current setlist where that transformation hits hardest for you?

Honestly the whole set feels empowered to me or share to choose one moment. I’m in my prime.

Visuals have always been key to your art. Can fans expect anything new or unexpected in the staging or aesthetic this time around?

Absolutely. I’ve been collaborating with some really incredible visual artists to create a space that feels like stepping into my psyche.

Looking back on your journey—from SoundCloud beginnings to headlining tours—what advice would you give to your younger self just starting out?

I’d tell her to stop apologizing. To remember that she is where she needs to be. I would say to trust yourself more. Don’t listen to other people and what you think they want from you. Own your own opinions. Everything you’re scared of expressing is what makes your art real.
